Is your school HSE compliant? A look at first aid requirements
15 January 2026
Health and Safety Executive (HSE) guidance makes it clear that every school must have appropriate first-aid provision in place to protect staff and pupils. The level of provision required depends on the size of the school and the number of employees.
For schools with small numbers of employees, the minimum requirement is:
- An appointed person to take charge of first-aid arrangements
- A suitably stocked first-aid box
While this meets the basic standard, it is strongly advised that appointed persons attend an Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) course to ensure they are confident and competent in dealing with incidents.
Where there are more than 25 employees, even in low-hazard environments such as schools, HSE guidance recommends additional measures, including:
- Qualified first-aiders
- Additional first-aid equipment
- A dedicated first-aid room
In these cases, completing a First Aid at Work (FAW) course is advised to ensure compliance and best practice.
Beyond minimum requirements, schools should also carry out a first-aid needs assessment. This helps identify whether extra provision is required based on staff numbers, layout of the site, and the physical and mental health needs of staff.
To support this, schools may also wish to invest in Mental Health First Aid training, helping staff recognise and respond appropriately to mental health concerns and further strengthening overall HSE compliance.
Proactive first-aid planning not only meets legal duties. It creates a safer, more supportive school environment for everyone.
